Every time I hear a new (or old) song that I even remotely enjoy, I suddenly have to have it. I have to own it, to be able to listen to it whenever I want to. Now, I listen to my music, and it is worth it, most of the time, but I have a serious iTunes addiction. This would not even be a problem if I were like most people in this world who just rip their music for free off the internet. Me, though, I pay for every song, and then I pay for that indiscretion both financially and emotionally.
$1.29, or $.99, if you’re buying a song no one sees much worth for anymore, doesn’t seem like much. That’s the kicker. It seems like so little that you click the button without even thinking, and then because it was so easy (click!) you do it again. Before you know it, you’re $15 poorer than you were 5 minutes ago, or, in all actuality, $15 poorer than you were 2 weeks ago, because on top of it all, iTunes feels the need to delay your transaction for an eternity before they make you pay. Not only do they have all the new shiny music readily available for your every craving and desire for instant gratification, but iTunes also possesses the element of surprise. Whenever my bank account randomly drops a sizable amount, I know that about three eons ago, I must have been buying too much music.
Every time I go on a binge, I tell myself I will never do it again. I have tried fasting from iTunes, I’ve tried switching to the curiously free podcasts, I’ve tried just listening to old music I bought and never paid much attention to, but nothing works. It’s a problem, and I’m slowly losing all respect for myself. Buying music temporarily makes me feel better, and I'm in the same vicious circle as all addicts. I seek comfort in the thing that ultimately causes me a great (or the greatest) deal of discomfort.

Hi! My name is Veronica. I too am an iTunes Addict. (group... "Hi, Veronica!")
I love your post! I can so identify with everything you say. Yes, what is it with iTunes and the delayed payment thing? It is a little alarming to get a "receipt" in my Inbox two or even three weeks after a purchase..
Oh, I used to be so terrible about iTunes... all those "pretty, shiny songs that I must have!" And, one or two or six or seven... wass not enough!
I blame Starbuck's in part, for my addiction. Every week, they have those little cards, for free downloads. Granted, I have "discovered" some amazing music through Starbuck's free "Pick of the Week", but once I am out in the "store"... well, I guess I don't have to tell you, do I?
I am better now, though. I have a music budget for each month, and I am being very good about staying in that budget. When I first started buying music (yes, I too find little satisfaction in the free stuff out on the Internet), I went waaaaay overboard... perhaps an 80GB iPod was not a wise purchase choice... in one month, I spent over $400 on iTunes. Tina, my then partner, went through the roof!! OMG!!! You would have thought I was killing puppies or something equally evil! I'm talking DEFCON 2 here... the missile silo doors are open and her finger is over the launch key!
But, we weathered that storm and I made a promise to her. Tina has only mentioned it once since then... in our vows when we got married last October... oh, my honey does have a sense of humor!
Anyway, now I feel guilty just buying one album at a time... so, maybe there is hope for me!
Haha, it's good to know I'm not alone. It's funny you mentioned Starbucks, because right now they have this deal going on where ir you buy a frappucino you get a free summer playlist of like 10 songs that they give you. I was so excited. Anyway, your success means there is hope for me, too! Yay!
I know! Is that not too cool? I picked up one of those cards last night when I stopped for my evening caffeine fix.... ten songs... WOW!!
I hope you find success as I have. Tina has been very supportive, and because I am doing so much better, as a reward, she bought me Journey's new album ECLIPSE.
Journey's new album is very, very, cool! My friend Jenny was telling me about it a couple of weeks ago. The brother of one of the members of her church is Deen Castronovo... the drummer for Journey. He gave her an advance copy of the CD... it is Awesome... definitely "rockier" than their earlier works. Nice "pedal to the floor...maybe just a touch of the speed limit... freeway drivin' music!" Lol!!
That's awesome! I'll definitely have to check it out!!
